Program Description:

All undergraduate and graduate students traveling abroad on University of Tennessee, Knoxville funds (including research, independent study, travel to conferences and seminars, athletic events, and other university-related business) are required to register with and be approved by the Center for International Education prior to departure. Please click the "apply now" button to begin the registration process. We will ask you to provide information about your travel plans and contact information in the destination country(ies). This information will include hotel and/or personal addresses, telephone numbers, email address and emergency contact information. Such information is necessary if emergencies arise either in the US or in the country(ies) of residence.

In addition, students are advised to register upon arrival in their country of destinations with the United States Embassy. This can now be done on-line at: In the event that issues affecting the safety of US citizens unexpectedly arise, the US Embassy needs up-to-date contact information for visitors in order to disseminate safety information, evacuation orders or other updated travel warnings. 
Please note: When you begin your application, you will be prompted by the system to enter a term during which your international travel will begin.  The terms and corresponding dates are as follows:
  1. Fall: August 22 - December 31
  2. Spring: January 1 - May 7
  3. Full Summer: May 8 - August 21
Students are no longer required to purchase international insurance, but are strongly encouraged to do.  Two exceptions exist:
  1. Students traveling on study abroad programs or with a University sponsored group programs as defined by the CIE will be required to purchase CISI insurance, if insurance is not already included as part of the program.
  2. Students traveling to locations with a US State Department Travel Warning or CDC travel health warning (Level 3)
