Study Intermediate Spanish in Santander, Spain!
Santander is the capital of the Cantabria region located in Northern Spain. The population of the city is around 200,000 inhabitants, but during the summer months, Spaniards look to Santander as a vacation spot and the population climbs. Santander is known for its extraordinarily beautiful landscape and its coastal location on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. The city combines an urban environment with what is essential in Cantabria: countryside, nature, gastronomy, and culture; but it's the beaches in Santander that are the best known and most appreciated city attraction. While in Santander students will visit the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, the Marine Museum of Cantabria, and the Magdalena Palace and Park
While in Santander, students will be housed in double rooms with Spanish families. All meals on non-excursion days are provided as well as laundry service once per week while living with host families. Trips to Madrid, Toledo and Bilbao are included.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive 6 credits for Spanish 223 (this is a combination of Spanish 211 and Spanish 212. Classes will be held Monday through Friday (4 hours/day).
MADRID (3 NIGHTS IN HOTEL)
In Madrid, visit the Prado Museum, which houses hundreds of masterpieces by Spanish artists such as Goya, El Greco, and Velázquez, and the ornate 18th-century Royal Palace or the Reina Sofia. Wander through the bustling Puerta del Sol and then take a relaxing stroll through Retiro Park.

TOLEDO (1 NIGHT)
Toledo is the city that inspired El Greco in the 16th century. Since then it has remained largely unchanged in its blending of Arabic, Jewish, and Christian influences. Toledo is also famous for its outstanding Cathedral, which houses many of El Greco’s paintings along with a variety of other art treasures. Toledo was the first capital of Spain.Students will enjoy guided walking tours of:
- San Juan de los Reyes Monastery
- Iglesia Santo Tome/El Greco's Masterpiece
- El Transito Synagogue and Sephardic Museum
POTES AND PICOS DE EUROPA (DAY TRIP)
The day trip to Picos de Europa National Park will reveal the majestic natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Students will then stop in Potes to learn about its rich history while walking its well-preserved streets, towers and bridges, and visit the nearby Iglesia Santa María Lebeña to enjoy its exceptional Mozarabic architecture.
BILBAO (DAY TRIP)
Travel to the capital city of the Biscay province and tour the famous Guggenheim Museum, considered a masterpiece of 20th century architecture. The Basque region is famous worldwide for its exquisite cuisine and the winding medieval streets of the historical center offer many opportunities to sample the local fare. The medieval part of the city (Casco Viejo) also has its own unique pulse with a steady flow of patrons coming and going throughout the day to have a coffee or a tapa, and move on to the next establishment.
SAN SEBASTIÁN (DAY TRIP)
Travel to the elegant and festive coastal town of San Sebastián to relax on the beach, shop in the old quarter and taste the region's famous tapas at an outdoor café. San Sebastián is known for its bay, La Bahía de la Concha, and is a popular tourist destination for many Spaniards in the summer. Explore the gorgeous 18th century Baroque church of Santa María and the striking 16th century Gothic church of San Vicente.
